The main entry portal of Mine #34, Pocahontas Fuel Company, Bishop, VA/WV, lay in Tazewell Co., VA, near Horsepen; the processing plant lay about two miles across the state line in McDowell County, WV. Both explosions, attributed to methane gas, occurred almost directly under the state line.
