Bessie Smith
"Empress of the Blues"
(1894 - 1937)

Bessie Smith is one of the most important women in the history of American music. She was the first to change a folk expression into an indigenous art form by successfully blending African and Western modes of music. The blues-jazz she sang is a significant base of one of America's chief contributions to world culture. She was a master performer with a commanding stage presence and a rich contralto that could project the deepest emotion. She set a new standard of excellence. People who saw her perform describe her as Junoesque, mesmerizing, hypnotic, and majestic, earning her the name, the Empress of the Blues.
