12/9/06 - I am interested in searching for information about my family who were once residents in Elkhorn in McDowell County. I believe they may first have arrived there from above Pittsburgh between 1903 & shortly before the 1910 census. They were residents of Elkhorn and worked in a coal mine there until about 1918. My grandfather was a young man then and we have been told that he was some sort of pump tender. Is it possible to find out any information with regards to employee rosters for any of the mining companies at that time? The names that I am interested in are three in number and vary in spelling. They are: Sheptock, Sheptak or Septak Dzugan Hriso My maternal grandfather was Wallace Dzugan but could have been known by his step-father’s last name of Sheptock, Sheptak or Septak. His first name could have been Vasel, Wasil or Vasily. These families were of Ruthenian descent but could have claimed to be Hungarian, Slovak, Austrian or Rusyn. Wallace’s step-father was George Sheptock. The 1910 census records this family as: Sheptock. Also found on that census was a Frank & Mary Sheptock, possibly a brother to George. George’s wife, my maternal great-grandmother was also named Mary. While living in Elkhorn, George & Mary had at least 2 sons, John & George Jr. John was born on 25 May 1913 and George on 18 Jan 1917. It has been told that George & Mary may have had at least 2 other children who didn’t survive. My grandfather Wallace had a younger sister named Anna Dzugan or (Sheptock) who married Andrew (Andras) Hriso in May 1911, most likely in Elkhorn. Anna was 14 when she married Andrew. They had a son named John born on 18 May 1912. It has also been told that they also had a daughter named Mary born between 1913 & 1919 that didn’t survive. Any information with regards to any of these individuals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Michael Teed

10/2/06 - I am trying to find information on my mother-in-laws family ( Sylvia Lambert,b.1925) .This is all that she had to go on. Her mother was Myrtle Moore, she married James Mayberry, they had 3 children. She said they lived in McDowell County, WVa and her father worked in Red Jacket in the coal mines and died, she assumed that it was a mining accident. After her fathers death the family split up. She believed that her sister Pearl was older and married a Steel. She was told that her brother Roy left on a freight train when he was 12 and no one knows what happend to him. Her mother Myrtle left her with a family, dont know their names but she later went to live with Sam Mullins and his wife. Her mother returned for her some time later and took her to Lincoln County, WVa , Hart ,Ranger area. Her mother worked for families in the area and Sylvia also remembers that she worked as a janitor at one of the schools. Myrtle later married George Adkins. Sylvia took the Adkins name even though she was never adopted. Sylvia married Elbert Lambert. They had four sons, Lonnie, Donald, Daniel and Kennith. Sylvia took care of her Mother Myrtle and her step father George in their last years till they passed away, both are buried in harts WVa. I found a James Mayberry in the 1930 McDowell County census, spouse was Myrtle but was a big age difference, so my brother-in-law doesn't think that it is the right James Mayberry. There also was a listing for a Roy Mayberry ,Goldie ( not Pearl) and Silva (not Sylvia )but was the correct birth year for Sylvia. These 4 were listed all in a row. Any help would be greatly appreciated. heyu@bright.net

9/2/06 - I have been trying to find out more about my husband's great grandfather, Claude Cicero Taylor, born 1888 in NC, and I believe he was working in the Anawalt Mines when he died in August 1918. He is in the 1900 census as living in Adkin, district 71, McDowell Co., WV, working as a miner in the coal mines. I have been at a loss to find out how he died. He left three young children and a young widow. One account I have is that he died in the influenza epidemic in 1918. I wondered if there are any accounts of the epidemic striking the mining camps, it would have spread very quickly and probably killed many miners if that indeed happened. I also wondered if there were any major accidents in August of 1918 that could have caused his death. Another account I have is that he died of mine consumption, but as far as I know that takes years to cause death and would not have likely been the cause of death of a strong young man of 30. Attempts to track down a death certificate have been frustratingly futile. Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be much appreciated! Thanks, Gabrielle Taylor

My grandpa was Patton Brewster who was born in 1916 in Six, West Virginia. He was the child of Demon and Mary Bell Brewster. I am trying to find out if Claburn Bud Hicks Cemetery or Woody-Mitchell Cemetery are easy to get to with a car. We were up there in June and got as far as the split with the Big Creek Road and the Mountain Fork Road. We were not sure if we could get up the mountain so we did not try. I know there is an angel statue on the right at the beginning of the road. I know that Phyllis A Coburn Griffith was the one who contributed the cemetery listing. If I could get in touch with her this would be great. Anyone with any information please notify me at littletom37@yahoo.com or dhunt@firsthealth.org Thanks, Donna Sue VanPelt Hunt

7/1/06 - Does anyone on the list live in or near the town of Kimball? I understand it is primarily an African American community now and has an historical importance in WV Black history? When my sister, Evelyn Stanley, died there in 1938 from Spinal Meningitis, my mother's good friend, Bell Jackson who was Black, brought them food, even though they were White, quarantined, and nobody was supposed to come to the house. My mother told me they would have starved if not for this good friend. Does anyone on the list know anything about Bell Jackson? I am interested in the Norwood Cemetery at Kimball; it is so badly overgrown, I couldn't reach it when I was there in May of this year. I wanted to have a memorial stone put up there for my sister Evelyn. I don't know where her grave is but I would like to put a memorial stone up there for her. Evelyn died before I was born, but she is important to me. I am thinking of coming back there again in a couple of years. Are there businesses who will contract to clean a cemetery in that area? Does anyone know if Norwood Cemetery is a municipal cemetery or is it privately owned? I would like to shovel off the stone steps leading up to the cemetery. Does anyone know who I would contact to be able to do that, and would I need permission? Thanks for any information. Christine Hayes

1/9/06 - My husband and I are looking for information regarding his geneolgy and other information (as well as pictures) regarding his family and Beech Fork and Amonate Mines. His Grandfather was Gentry L. Spence and Grandmother was Gertrude Freeman. We know that his Grandfather and Uncle (erroneously mentioned as Robert Spencer) were both killed in the Bartley Mine Number 1 explosion on January 10, 1940. We do not have much information regarding his Grandmother Gertrude (who raised him) other than she came from around Pulaski, Virginia and was born around 1898 and died in or around 1980 or '81. Last report we have of his father is that he lived in or around Dublin, VA and also had a daughter named Gertrude. Any, or all, help that you could give us regarding these surnames would be greatly appreciated. Regarding the two previously mentioned mines; my husband worked there from 1976 till the time that Amonate shutdown their underground operations in 1994 and we are making a scrapbook for our Grandson and would like to include pictures of these two Consolidation mines and the old Island Creek mine of Beatrice, located in Keen Mountain, VA. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Harold & Salli Spence

1/6/06 - Can anyone help me with this branch of the Justice Family. Solomon Justice and his wife moved to McDowell County from Kentucky. One of their children was called Sheridan Justice, born in 1857. I believe he married Eliza Buchannan, born 4th December, 1859 in Gilbert. They had three children - Arminda born August14, 1883, Eli born September 17, 1885 and Lurina born March 1, 1888. Eli died in 1905 and Lurina in 1913. Something went wrong with this marriage and Eliza married an Englishman called William Watts and had more children with him. I have read that Sheridan Justice died in 1897 and is buried in Davy. Eliza Watts died March 20, 1937. Arminda, or Mindy, Justice had a son, William Earl Justice born in 1909. He was my husband's grandfather. She married a Mr Dingus and had more children with him. William Earl Justice died in Virginia in 1961 before my husband was born. Any information on any branch of this family would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Fiona Maddow
